Gaza’s Last Refuge Under Siege as Hundreds of Thousands Forced to Flee Rafah

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which reignited in October 2023, has pushed millions of Gazans to seek shelter amidst escalating tensions. As the Israeli military intensifies its ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, residents are fleeing southward in search of safety.

Rafah, the southernmost part of Gaza, has long been considered a last bastion of refuge for those escaping the turmoil. However, this sanctuary is now under severe threat. According to the United Nations, large swaths of Rafah have transformed into a 'ghost town.' UN humanitarians reported on Tuesday that approximately 450,000 Gazans have been forcibly displaced from the area within the past week due to Israeli evacuation orders.

CGTN visited a school shelter in Khan Yunis, a nearby region, to speak with Gazans who have gathered there in hopes of finding safety. One resident shared their harrowing experience, stating, \"We were displaced from Gaza. The people here have seen death many times. We are desperate.\" The dire situation highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
