EU’s New AI Law: Balancing Innovation with Societal Risks

The European Union has given final approval to a comprehensive artificial intelligence law, marking a significant step in regulating the rapidly evolving technology. This 27-nation bloc's AI act aims to address both the innovative potential and the societal challenges posed by AI advancements.

One of the latest breakthroughs in AI is OpenAI's Sora, a text-to-video model that has captured attention across various industries, including filmmaking. Sora can transform text instructions into high-definition, minute-long videos, handling complex scenes, multiple characters, and precise thematic and background details. Additionally, it can extend existing videos by generating animations from still images, ensuring visual consistency.

However, with great power comes great responsibility. AI technologies like Sora have also been linked to the spread of fake content, such as counterfeit Taylor Swift shopping ads on social media and deepfakes of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Siwei Lyu, a computer science professor at the University of Buffalo's Media Forensics Lab, highlighted in an interview with The New York Times that such forgeries are often created using text-to-speech services paired with lip-syncing programs.

Marina, an international student from Russia at Tsinghua University in Beijing, shared her perspective on the matter: “AI is very convenient for use, to some degree, but it might be a dangerous double-edged sword for society.” Her insight underscores the need for balanced regulations to harness AI's benefits while mitigating its risks.
