New Zealand Voices Concern Over Japan’s Nuclear Wastewater Release

As Japan prepares for the fourth round of discharging nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, scheduled to begin in late February 2024, voices from across the Pacific express growing concerns. Local media reported on December 18 that Japan has already released over 23,000 tonnes of nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean in less than three months through three previous rounds.

In Christchurch, New Zealand, residents shared their apprehensions about the ongoing releases. Some New Zealanders argue that Japan should have considered the interests of neighboring countries and sought consensus before proceeding with the discharge. The community emphasizes the potential environmental impacts and the importance of regional cooperation in handling such sensitive issues.
