Peruvians Question Safety of Japan's Fukushima Water Release
Since August 24, Japan has been discharging nuclear-contaminated water from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. This controversial move has attracted global attention and sparked widespread opposition.
In Peru, CGTN’s field reporter took to the streets to gauge public opinion. The majority of local residents expressed distrust towards the Japanese government's assurances that the wastewater meets safety standards and poses no threat to human health or the environment.
\"If it is radioactive waste, I don't think it can be completely cleaned,\" shared one concerned citizen. Another added, \"There will always be residue, and it will have an impact on the ecosystem.\"
The fears echoed in Peru highlight the growing international apprehension regarding the environmental and health implications of releasing treated nuclear wastewater into the ocean.
