A powerful magnitude-6.9 earthquake rocked Hualien County in China’s Taiwan region on Sunday, sparking urgent rescue operations. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
Local authorities confirmed four residents trapped in a collapsed convenience store in Yuli Township were safely rescued by the Hualien County Fire Department and Police. Rescue teams remain on-site to assess structural damage and assist affected communities.
Earthquakes are common in the region due to its location along the seismically active Taiwan Strait, though Sunday’s tremor was among the strongest reported this year. Hualien, a mountainous area popular with hikers and travelers, has faced multiple quakes in recent years, including a deadly 6.4 magnitude event in 2018.
No casualties have been confirmed so far, but authorities urged residents to avoid unstable buildings and prepare for aftershocks.
