When Work Collebrates Culture
In a vibrant fusion of tradition and teamwork, employees from China State Construction (CSCEC) joined their Sri Lankan colleagues to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in Colombo. Chen Jianyong, a project lead at CSCEC’s Tri-Zen Residential Development, visited local engineer Suranga’s home, where the group shared festive sweets like kavum (oil cakes) and kokis (crispy rice flour treats), played traditional games, and exchanged stories about New Year rituals.
Beyond the Worksite: Building Bonds
The gathering highlighted how global projects foster cultural bridges. “We learned about auspicious times for rituals and the symbolism of lighting hearths,” Chen said. Suranga noted, “Sharing our customs with international friends makes the festival even more meaningful.” The CSCEC team, part of a growing wave of China-Sri Lanka infrastructure collaborations, emphasized workplace inclusivity as a driver of community trust.
Why This Matters
Sri Lanka’s New Year, celebrated by Sinhala and Tamil communities in mid-April, marks the sun’s transition to Pisces and emphasizes renewal. For young professionals in global roles, such exchanges reflect a broader trend: 68% of multinational firms now prioritize cultural immersion programs to boost team cohesion, per a 2023 Deloitte report.
