As Shanghai adapts to a surge in COVID-19 cases, volunteers like Ruyou are at the forefront of the city’s innovative pandemic response. The China Flower Expo Park, transformed into a temporary medical facility, now shelters 1,300 asymptomatic and mild-case patients. Ruyou, part of the security team patrolling the site, shared a firsthand look at his daily work through a vlog released this week.
“We’re not just enforcing safety protocols—we’re providing reassurance,” Ruyou explained, detailing his role in monitoring the sprawling facility since it opened on April 4. The converted park features open-air wards and round-the-clock healthcare teams, reflecting Shanghai’s strategy to prioritize patient care while minimizing strain on traditional hospitals.
Local authorities have repurposed stadiums and convention centers across the city, creating over 100,000 temporary beds. Volunteers handle tasks from logistics to mental health support, with many young professionals and students joining the effort. “This is how Shanghai stays resilient,” Ruyou added. “Every volunteer contributes to something bigger.”
