Wild Boars Threaten Crops in Sichuan’s Tongjiang County

Wild boars have been a persistent challenge for local villagers in Tongjiang, a mountainous county nestled in southwest Chinese mainland's Sichuan Province. These crop-devouring animals roam freely, causing significant damage to agricultural activities that are vital to the community's livelihood.

In 2020, approximately 20,000 wild boars inhabited the forests covering nearly two-thirds of Tongjiang's area. This translates to a density of at least 7 wild boars per square kilometer, a figure that drastically exceeds the recommended population control limit of 2 per square kilometer. Such high populations make it difficult to manage and mitigate the impact on local farms.

The excessive number of wild boars not only threatens the agricultural output but also poses challenges for wildlife management efforts aimed at maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Local authorities are striving to find effective solutions to control the wild boar population and protect the region's crops, ensuring the sustainability of both the environment and the community's economy.
