How Lamb and Potatoes Transformed Gansu’s Dongxiang County Out of Poverty

Navigating the challenges of poverty, Dongxiang Autonomous County in northwest China's Gansu Province has made remarkable strides in uplifting its residents. Traditionally reliant on agriculture, the county's economy centers around wheat, maize, potato farming, and sheep rearing. In 2013, nearly a third of Dongxiang’s population lived below the poverty line.

The turning point came with targeted poverty alleviation projects focusing on food security and sustainable agriculture. In November 2020, these efforts culminated in Dongxiang being officially removed from the list of impoverished counties.

Andy Boreham, a New Zealand vlogger, visited Dongxiang and highlighted how the emphasis on staple crops like lamb and potatoes played a pivotal role in this transformation. By enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring a stable food supply, Dongxiang set a model for other regions aiming to combat poverty through sustainable practices.
