In 2006, Spanish-Argentinian award-winning travel photographer Angel Lopez-Soto embarked on a remarkable journey to Lhasa, marking his first visit to the breathtaking region of Tibet, often referred to as the \"roof of the world.\"
Angel had the unique opportunity to witness the inauguration of the Beijing-Lhasa railway, a monumental achievement in Chinese engineering. Just a month after the railway's official opening, he was part of a select group of foreign journalists and photographers invited by the British company GW Travel to experience this historic route firsthand.
The five-day expedition covered 1,956 kilometers, during which Angel documented the challenges and triumphs of operating such an advanced railway system. Traveling in a luxury convoy equipped with an oxygen system similar to those used in airplanes, he captured the essence of this engineering marvel from inside the train.
Throughout the journey, Angel was deeply impressed by the stark contrasts he witnessed in Tibet. The region's harsh, frozen landscapes stood in beautiful contrast to the warmth and hospitality of its people, who live in relative isolation yet remain incredibly welcoming to visitors.
