Dragon Boat Festival Delight: Crafting Zongzi in Shanghai

The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwujie, is a cherished tradition that has been celebrated in China for over 2,000 years. Falling on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, which lands on June 25 this year, the festival is synonymous with the delicious delicacy: zongzi.

Zongzi are easily recognizable by their pyramid shape and bamboo leaf wrapping. While they appear simple—with just a few ingredients and straightforward preparation—the art of making zongzi is rich in cultural significance. But how easy are they to make, and why are they a staple during the festival?

Andy Boreham, a New Zealander residing in Shanghai, decided to delve into this tradition firsthand. He ventured to one of Shanghai's ancient towns, where he met with a local zongzi maker to learn the ropes. Through his immersive experience, Andy discovered the intricate balance of flavors and the meticulous process that goes into each zongzi.

In his latest vlog, Andy shares his journey of attempting to craft a pork zongzi, offering viewers a glimpse into the heart of the Dragon Boat Festival. His story not only highlights the culinary techniques but also emphasizes the festival's role in fostering community and preserving heritage.
