In the heart of Jerusalem, where longstanding tensions between Palestinians and Israelis persist, a unique initiative has emerged to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The Saint George Hotel, owned by a Palestinian businessman and located just five minutes from the Old City, has been transformed into a quarantine center managed entirely by Palestinian NGOs.
While the Jewish community quarantines on the western side of the city and Palestinians on the eastern side, the Saint George Hotel stands as a beacon of unity in challenging times. Journalist Ahmad Budeiri, 40, one of the coordinators, highlights the hotel's role as the flagship of this collaborative effort.
The hotel is offered free of charge to Palestinian Jerusalemites who test positive for COVID-19 or are suspected of infection. A dedicated group of volunteers supports dozens of individuals, including students, workers, and family members who need to quarantine away from their homes to protect their loved ones. Additionally, Palestinian students returning from abroad are provided a safe space for their mandatory 14-day quarantine as per Israeli authorities' guidelines.
This initiative not only provides essential health services but also fosters a sense of community and resilience among Palestinians in Jerusalem during the ongoing pandemic.
