Madrid’s Expo Center Transforms into Critical Field Hospital Amid COVID-19 Surge

In response to the escalating COVID-19 crisis, the Institución Ferial de Madrid (IFEMA), popularly known as the Madrid convention center, has been swiftly converted into a bustling field hospital. Currently, two exhibition halls are fully occupied with patients, while a third is undergoing refurbishment to accommodate the increasing number of coronavirus cases.

Leading the efforts is Captain Izard of the sappers of the paratrooper brigade. Under his leadership, a dedicated team of around 40 individuals works tirelessly from dawn until dusk. Their responsibilities range from setting up beds and outfitting medical facilities to managing logistics, ensuring that the field hospital operates smoothly despite the immense pressure on Madrid’s regular hospitals.

The team’s hard work and efficiency are crucial in alleviating the strain on the city’s healthcare system. Captain Izard expressed his hopes for the end of the crisis, sharing a personal wish to travel to Seville and reunite with his family once the situation stabilizes.
