Slovakia’s Mask Warriors: Sewing Hope During COVID-19

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Slovakia experienced a significant shortage of protective face masks. Amid this crisis, Zdena Nemethyova emerged as a beacon of hope, turning her sewing skills into a vital resource for her community.

Driven by a deep sense of responsibility, Nemethyova began crafting face masks to help alleviate the shortage. Her efforts soon inspired others, leading her to create a Facebook group titled \"Sewing Masks.\" Today, the group boasts 2,000 members who share designs and sewing tips, amplifying the impact of their collective efforts.

To date, the group has produced and distributed over 11,000 face masks, providing essential protection to more than seven hospitals across Slovakia. \"I am someone who is constantly suffering from a guilty feeling that I'm not doing enough,\" Nemethyova shared, reflecting on her personal motivation to contribute meaningfully during the pandemic.

Recognizing the growing demand for face masks, Nemethyova partnered with a web portal to streamline the distribution process. This collaboration has enabled the group to reach even more healthcare facilities, ensuring that frontline workers receive the protection they need.
