A high school senior from the Navajo Nation is making strides to bring sustainable energy to her community. Kelly Charley is developing a solar heater aimed at providing electricity to thousands of homes that currently lack access. The Navajo Nation spans across 4,345 kilometers and three states, where about a third of homes are without electricity. Many residents, including Kelly’s grandparents, rely on coal for heating, often traveling over 160 kilometers to obtain it. The heavy reliance on coal is believed to contribute significantly to respiratory illnesses prevalent in the region. With her innovative solar heater, Kelly aims to reduce dependence on coal, improve health outcomes, and enhance the quality of life for Navajo residents.
