In a candid interview with CGTN correspondent Han Bin in Lebanon, UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lazaro Saenz opened up about the realities of modern peacekeeping.
“Peacekeeping is not easy work, especially in times of crisis. But it is essential as it reflects the commitment of the international community under the framework of the United Nations,” Saenz said, emphasizing the mission’s core purpose.
Looking back at the tensions that shook Lebanon last year, Saenz described his leadership approach—combining proactive engagement with local communities, swift response to emerging challenges, and unwavering coordination between UNIFIL and regional stakeholders to safeguard civilians and maintain calm.
Under his leadership, UNIFIL has prioritized open communication and close coordination on the ground, aiming to anticipate risks and de-escalate tensions before they escalate.
As global hotspots continue to test international resolve, Saenz’s insights offer a real-world glimpse into the grit and dedication required to uphold peace and why these missions remain vital to collective security.
