‘Ferryman of Souls’: Taiwan Region Leader Returns Ashes of 200+ Veterans to Chinese Mainland

In an inspiring act of dedication and respect, Liu Dewen, the chief of Xiangheli Village in Kaohsiung of the Taiwan region, has been quietly working for the past two decades to repatriate the ashes of over 200 veterans to their native homes on the Chinese mainland.

Known affectionately as the 'Ferryman of Souls,' Liu Dewen has taken it upon himself to ensure that veterans who once served their country are honored in their hometowns, providing a sense of closure and remembrance for their families.

One of his most recent endeavors in 2023 involved the return of Tang Yiqi's ashes, a veteran from Sichuan Province who had been away from his homeland for more than 70 years. With Liu's unwavering commitment, Tang Yiqi was finally laid to rest in his hometown, reuniting him with his roots after decades apart.

Liu's efforts not only honor the memories of these brave individuals but also strengthen the bonds between the Taiwan region and the Chinese mainland, fostering a sense of unity and respect across communities.

His selfless mission highlights the profound impact that one individual can have on the lives of many, ensuring that the sacrifices of these veterans are never forgotten and are appropriately commemorated where they belong.
