Earlier this month at the Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) in Hainan province on the Chinese mainland, a diverse group of emerging filmmakers gathered for HIIFF Talents, a program designed to bridge creative vision with industry resources.
A collaborative platform rather than a competition, HIIFF Talents invited directors from across the globe to present their projects in a live pitch session. Over two days, participants shared film concepts ranging from intimate documentaries to ambitious narrative features—and received real-time feedback from a panel of seasoned producers, distributors and investors.
"I came in with a rough outline of my documentary about urban art in Nairobi," says Aisha Mwangi, a Kenyan filmmaker in her late 20s. "The feedback I got on structure and funding strategy was invaluable. I now feel ready to take the next step."

Since its launch, HIIFF Talents has become a catalyst for fresh voices in global cinema. Organizers report that past participants have gone on to secure funding, win awards at major festivals and build lasting partnerships. This year's cohort leaves with new connections and a clearer roadmap for bringing their visions to the screen.
