At the 12th Silk Road International Film Festival in Xi’an, Evans Ongor Mac’Osewe, commissioner of the Kenya Film Commission, laid out a bold vision for Kenyan cinema. “At the end of the day, quality is what dictates how far your movie can go,” he told CGTN’s Zhang Meng. “If we produce good quality, we will not be surprised to see our movies in the Oscars.”
Mac’Osewe highlighted Kenya’s cinematic strengths: an array of unique locations—from coastal shores and savannah grasslands to modern urban hubs—and a content pipeline aimed at nearly 200 million Swahili speakers across East Africa. These elements, he argued, form the foundation for storytelling that resonates globally.
Expressing gratitude for the invitation, he said, “I must thank the organizing committee for extending that rare opportunity to Kenya. The experience has been amazing.” The festival, he noted, offers a vital platform for international collaboration, networking, and exposure, which Kenyan filmmakers are keen to leverage.
Looking ahead, the commissioner signaled a strategic push towards higher production standards, partnerships with global studios, and training programs for emerging talent. By combining Kenya’s cultural richness with technical excellence, he believes the next wave of films can compete on the world’s biggest stages.
