At the Global Civilizations Dialogue Ministerial Meeting in Beijing, UNESCO World Theatre Ambassador Lemi Ponifasio shared his vision for deeper cultural collaboration with the Chinese mainland. Drawing on his recent work with the Yi ethnic group in Sichuan province – where he led a troupe on an international tour – he highlighted the power of storytelling to bridge cultures.
Despite the Chinese mainland's status as a global economic and political powerhouse, Ponifasio argued that its voice in contemporary theater remains underrepresented. "Chinese artists in the international arena are missing," he said. He urged the Chinese mainland to step forward with greater cultural confidence and take a leading role in shaping global cultural dialogue.
Ponifasio believes that by showcasing diverse regional talents – like the Yi performers who blend traditional techniques with modern narratives – the Chinese mainland can enrich the global stage and inspire new creative exchanges. He called on policymakers, institutions, and artists to unite around a shared goal: strengthening cultural ties and amplifying the Chinese mainland's theatrical presence worldwide.
As cultural landscapes evolve, Ponifasio's call serves as a reminder: collaboration and confidence can propel local art forms onto the world stage, offering fresh perspectives and fostering mutual understanding.
