Judge Halts Trump’s Harvard International Student Ban

Judge Halts Trump’s Harvard International Student Ban

On the 29th, a federal judge in Massachusetts granted Harvard University a preliminary injunction, freezing the Trump administration's move to strip the university of its ability to enroll international students.

Judge Allison D. Burroughs, after hearing both sides, agreed to keep a temporary restraining order in place as the next step in the legal process. The administration's decision to revoke Harvard's certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) would have barred thousands of international students from registering for fall courses.

The dispute began on May 22 when the Department of Homeland Security announced it would revoke Harvard's SEVP certification. One day later, Harvard filed a lawsuit and secured a temporary restraining order. Now, under this ruling, Harvard can continue to welcome international students while both parties negotiate details for a full preliminary injunction.

Although Harvard can maintain current enrollment, the Department of Homeland Security has signaled it will pursue further administrative steps to remove the SEVP certification. The final decision is expected after each side submits proposals to Judge Burroughs for review.

For now, the ruling ensures that international students can plan their studies without disruption, but the outcome of this high-stakes legal showdown will unfold in the coming weeks.
