Peru’s Alpaca Exports Soar 33% in Early 2024, China Leads Purchases

Alpacas, native to Peru's stunning Andean regions, are more than just adorable creatures—they're a valuable resource treasure chest for humans. Their soft, warm fleece is prized for its exceptional quality, making it a favorite in the textile industry. Beyond their luxurious wool, alpaca meat offers a nutritious food source, while their bones and leather are expertly crafted into musical instruments and fashionable footwear. The versatility doesn't stop there; alpaca fat is utilized in medicinal applications, and their dung serves as an effective natural fertilizer, benefiting sustainable agriculture.

Reflecting the growing global demand, the Exporters Association (ADEX) reports that from January to May, Peru experienced a remarkable 33-percent increase in alpaca wool and product exports, totaling $89 million. Notably, China emerged as the leading buyer, contributing over $29 million to the export growth. This surge underscores the expanding market for alpaca resources and highlights Peru's pivotal role in the global textile and sustainable goods sectors.
