A landmark Cross-Straits Chinese Culture Summit opened in Beijing on Wednesday, bringing together over 400 notable individuals from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region. The summit highlighted the shared Chinese cultural heritage between residents on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and emphasized the importance of strengthening cultural exchanges and cooperation.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Song Tao, head of both the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, underscored the common roots and cultural values that bind the Chinese mainland and the Taiwan region. \"Chinese culture has always valued the principle that peace is of paramount importance, and the principle that the people are the foundation of the state,\" Song remarked.
Song expressed hope that Taiwan compatriots, particularly those in the cultural sector, will actively participate in cross-Straits exchanges and collaborate across various fields. This cooperation aims to counter movements advocating for \"Taiwan independence\" and to promote national reunification.
Liu Chao-Shiuan, chairman of the Foundation of Chinese Culture for Sustainable Development, echoed these sentiments. He emphasized that enhanced cultural exchange and cooperation would deepen mutual understanding, advance Chinese culture, and strengthen the foundation for peaceful development across the Taiwan Straits.
The three-day summit will feature a main forum on literature and seven sub-forums, providing a platform for in-depth discussions and collaborative initiatives.
