Texas may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about the traditional Chinese folk art of lion dancing. However, for the past 25 years, students at the University of Texas at Austin have been passionately practicing and performing this vibrant art form.
Currently, the troupe boasts about 25 active members who come from a variety of backgrounds, including Asian American and Hispanic communities. This diversity enriches their performances and fosters a unique cultural exchange within the group.
The primary goal of the troupe is to share and introduce the art of lion dance to the broader Texas community. Through their performances at university events, local festivals, and community gatherings, they aim to promote cultural understanding and appreciation.
By maintaining this tradition for over two decades, the lion dance troupe not only preserves an important cultural heritage but also bridges gaps between different communities, showcasing the power of art in bringing people together.
