In a recent statement, Xi Jinping, the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized the critical importance of preserving China’s cultural and natural treasures. Highlighting the nation’s rich heritage, Xi called for reinforced efforts to protect, preserve, and utilize these assets to ensure their continued relevance and allure in the modern era.
Xi made these remarks following the inscription of one cultural heritage site and two natural heritage sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2024. The newly recognized sites include the Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital, the Badain Jaran Desert – Towers of Sand and Lakes, and the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase II). These inscriptions were announced during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, India.
The inclusion of these sites underscores China’s commitment to modernization that harmonizes material progress with cultural and ethical advancement, as well as a balanced relationship between humanity and nature. Xi noted that these recognitions not only enhance China’s cultural landscape but also contribute to the broader tapestry of global civilizations.
Furthermore, Xi urged that the recent UNESCO inscriptions be leveraged as an opportunity to systematically and comprehensively protect China’s cultural and natural heritage. He emphasized the need to utilize these heritage sites effectively to meet the evolving needs of the population.
In addition to national efforts, Xi called for increased international exchange and cooperation in the field of heritage preservation. He highlighted the importance of contributing to the Global Civilization Initiative and building a community with a shared future for humanity, reinforcing China’s role in fostering global collaboration and understanding.
With a total of 59 World Heritage sites currently recognized in China, the nation continues to showcase its diverse and rich heritage on the global stage.
