Celebrating World Population Day: 30 Years of Progress and Ongoing Challenges

July 11th marks World Population Day, an initiative by the United Nations that commemorates the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). This day highlights the crucial role of women's sexual and reproductive health and rights in achieving sustainable development worldwide.

Since the ICPD's Programme of Action was established three decades ago, there have been significant advancements in women's reproductive health. Access to family planning, maternal healthcare, and education has improved, empowering millions of women to make informed choices about their lives and futures.

However, despite these strides, many challenges persist. In various regions, women still face barriers to accessing essential healthcare services, and issues such as gender inequality and inadequate education continue to hinder progress. Addressing these challenges is vital for ensuring that the gains made over the past 30 years are not only maintained but also expanded upon.

Ediz Tiyansan reports from Los Angeles, California, shedding light on the ongoing efforts and the road ahead for achieving comprehensive reproductive rights and sustainable development.
