Tajik Youths Revive Buzkashi in Xinjiang’s High Mountains

Amid the breathtaking high-altitude landscapes of Xinjiang's Taxkorgan County, the vibrant spirit of the Tajik ethnic youth comes alive through the traditional sport of Buzkashi, also known as 'goat pulling.' As hooves thunder across the rugged Pamir Plateau and cheers echo through the air, the excitement is palpable.

Buzkashi is more than just a sport; it is a testament to the strength, skill, and teamwork of the participants. This fierce competition, deeply rooted in cultural heritage, is often showcased during festivals and joyous gatherings. Young riders gallop over the challenging terrain, striving to seize a goat carcass and carry it to a designated goal, demonstrating not only their physical prowess but also their dedication to preserving this ancient tradition.

The event highlights the rich cultural tapestry of western Xinjiang, where various ethnic groups come together to celebrate their unique customs. For the Tajik youth, Buzkashi is a way to connect with their heritage, foster community spirit, and inspire the next generation to continue these beloved traditions.
