Exploring the Future of Cinema: XR Takes Center Stage at SIFF

The 26th Shanghai International Film Festival is setting the stage for the future of cinema with a dedicated session on extended reality (XR). This captivating event showcases the latest advancements in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), offering attendees an immersive dive into next-generation film technology.

Visitors equipped with cutting-edge XR headsets are transported into realistic virtual worlds, highlighting the innovative strides being made in moviemaking. Che Lin, Curator of SIFF XR and Associate Professor of Communication at the University of China, shared insights into the evolution of VR technology. \"In the early days of VR, people had to turn themselves around on swivel chairs to enjoy different perspectives. Now we can do that with handheld controllers or just by using our hands and eye movements. We can even summon creatures with our voices and measure the grandeur of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum with our footsteps,\" Lin explained.

As XR technologies continue to advance, the possibilities for filmmakers and audiences alike are expanding, promising a new era of storytelling that is more interactive and immersive than ever before.
