A group of college students from the U.S. recently embarked on an enriching journey to the Chinese mainland, exploring some of its most iconic and historic infrastructures. Their itinerary included visits to the Badaling section of the Great Wall, the Zhan Tianyou Memorial Museum, and the Badaling Great Wall Railway Station in Beijing.
During their visit, the students had the opportunity to learn from Lyu Gang, deputy chief engineer of China Railway Engineering Corporation. Lyu Gang provided an in-depth introduction to the history of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, a marvel of early 20th-century engineering. The construction of the railway, which began in 1909, was led by Zhan Tianyou, a Yale University civil engineering graduate. Upon completion, the railway boasted a speed of 35 kilometers per hour, a significant achievement for its time.
This exchange program aims to bridge understanding between young global citizens by showcasing China's rich historical legacy and its advancements in infrastructure. By engaging directly with Chinese engineers and exploring key historical sites, the students gained valuable insights into China's development and the collaborative efforts that continue to shape its future.
