China’s Gaokao Sees Record 13.42 Million Students Registered for 2024

China's national college entrance examination, the gaokao, has reached a new milestone with 13.42 million students registering for the 2024 exams. This represents an increase of 510,000 students compared to last year, highlighting the growing competitiveness among Chinese students aspiring to higher education.

The Ministry of Education announced that extensive coordinated efforts have been made to ensure the smooth organization of the exams. Local authorities have enhanced support services, assisting candidates with transportation, accommodation, medical care, and maintaining a quiet environment during the examination period.

Special provisions have been implemented to support students with disabilities and other special needs. Notably, Braille exam papers have been created for 15 visually impaired candidates across 11 provincial-level regions. Additionally, over 11,000 candidates with disabilities will receive tailored support to ensure they can perform their best during the gaokao.

The gaokao, scheduled for early June this year, remains one of the most significant examinations in the lives of Chinese students. Success in the gaokao is often seen as a critical factor in determining future educational and career opportunities, making the extensive preparation and support services essential for thousands of young individuals across the Chinese mainland.
