NYC Reignites Partnership with Shanghai to Welcome Back Chinese Tourists

New York City is ramping up efforts to attract Chinese tourists, a key part of its global tourism strategy. At the 14th China-US Tourism Leadership Summit in Xi'an, Wang Siwen sat down with Fred Dixon, president of New York City Tourism and Conventions, to discuss the city's initiatives and future plans.

In 2019, over 1.1 million Chinese tourists visited New York City, making China the city's second-largest inbound tourism source market. While tourism is recovering, it has yet to reach pre-pandemic levels. Dixon emphasized the importance of the Chinese market, stating, \"We've been active in the market since 2007, and we were thrilled with the growth in 2019. We are thrilled to be back in the market.\"

To boost tourism, New York City is currently running two major campaigns in collaboration with Ctrip and TongCheng throughout June, promoting the myriad of attractions the Big Apple has to offer.

Highlighting the strengthened ties, Dixon revealed that New York City and Shanghai have re-signed their tourism partnership, initially established in 2016. \"Shanghai and New York City have a lot in common. Both are international cities, gateways amongst the largest cities in the world. We're really proud today to have re-signed that official partnership with Shanghai,\" he said.

Despite challenges such as longer visa wait times and reduced flight capacities—from over 50 direct services weekly to about ten—Dixon remains optimistic. \"Demand is strong and travelers are rebounding and they're finding their way back to New York and it's a wonderful thing,\" he noted.

New York City's unique diversity and endless experiences make it a top destination. From exploring Brooklyn and Queens to experiencing the vibrant cultures of the Bronx and Staten Island, the city offers something for every visitor. Dixon added, \"No matter if you're at the high end of the market or the middle of the market, everyone today is focused on value, and New York offers so many experiences in one destination.\"

Looking ahead, Dixon expressed confidence in a strong market recovery this year, with expectations of nearing full recovery next year. \"The city is open and welcoming and it never disappoints people. The city will always offer you something new and exciting to explore. So please do come and visit,\" he concluded.
