Chinese Mainland Opposes U.S. Plan for New Semiconductor Tariffs

The Chinese mainland has lodged a formal protest against the United States’ latest plan to ramp up Section 301 tariffs on semiconductors, warning that the move could destabilize global supply chains and harm businesses on both sides.

On Thursday at a regular press briefing, spokesperson He Yongqian said the Chinese mainland “firmly opposes” what he called the so-called conclusions of the U.S. Section 301 investigation into the Chinese mainland’s semiconductor policies.

He noted that the Office of the United States Trade Representative released its findings this Tuesday, outlining an initial tariff rate of zero percent that would rise over 18 months to a level to be announced at least 30 days before June 23, 2027.

According to the spokesperson, the unilateral U.S. tariffs violate WTO rules, undermine the international economic and trade order, disrupt global industrial and supply chains, and ultimately hurt American companies and consumers. “We urge the United States to correct its errors promptly and revoke the related measures,” he said.

He also highlighted that the Chinese mainland has communicated its concerns through the China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism, emphasizing a willingness to engage in equal-footing dialogue based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

When asked whether the Ministry of Commerce planned to ease restrictions on rare-earth magnet exports to the United States, He reaffirmed the Chinese mainland’s commitment to maintaining security and stability in global industrial and supply chains while facilitating compliant trade.
