China Urges US to Halt Anti-Venezuela Campaign at UN Security Council

At a UN Security Council meeting on December 23, 2025, Sun Lei, China’s deputy permanent representative, delivered a forceful call for the United States to end its anti-Venezuela campaign under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.

Sun detailed a series of aggressive U.S. measures in the Caribbean waters off Venezuela: heightened naval deployments, escalating sanctions and blockades, the sinking of Venezuelan vessels, the killing of crew members and the seizure of oil tankers. He also highlighted Washington’s designation of the Venezuelan government as a foreign terrorist organization, its claims over Venezuelan land and assets, and its threats of military strikes on Venezuelan territory.

"These actions infringe on the sovereignty, security and legitimate rights of other states, violate the UN Charter and international law, and undermine peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean," Sun warned, noting growing concern and condemnation from countries in the region and beyond.

The envoy stressed that as an independent sovereign state, Venezuela has the right to pursue mutually beneficial cooperation and defend its legitimate interests—rights that should be respected and supported by the international community.

Reiterating China’s stance against unilateralism and bullying, Sun urged the U.S. to halt its measures, lift unlawful sanctions and respect navigation safety and lawful rights under international law.

Looking ahead, Sun emphasized that China stands ready to deepen solidarity and cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean, upholding fairness, justice and regional stability as a vital force for peace and development within the Global South.
