Engineers in the Chinese mainland have unveiled Super Carbon-1, the world's first power generation unit powered by supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2). Revealed in December 2025, this breakthrough delivers up to 85 percent more electricity from the same heat source and boosts net power output by over 50 percent compared to conventional steam cycles.

Unlike traditional systems that rely on water, Super Carbon-1 uses sCO2 as its working fluid, taking advantage of higher thermal efficiency at relatively lower operating pressures.
