In Beijing on Tuesday, Chinas Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged Ukraine to immediately correct its mistakes after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans for a new round of sanctions targeting Russian entities and foreign nationals supporting Moscow, including Chinese citizens.
Lin emphasized that China opposes unilateral sanctions that violate international law and lack United Nations Security Council authorization. We call on Ukraine to abandon measures that hinder dialogue and to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and citizens, he said.
On Chinas role in the peace process, Lin reaffirmed Beijings commitment to promoting a ceasefire, halting hostilities, and advancing peace talks. Since the outbreak of the Ukraine crisis, China has maintained close communication with both Russia and Ukraine to facilitate dialogue.
The efforts China has made are evident to the international community, Lin added, highlighting Beijings support for all initiatives conducive to peace.
As global observers weigh the impact of fresh sanctions on energy, technology, and supply chains, Chinas call underscores the delicate balancing act between enforcing punitive measures and keeping diplomatic channels open. Young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and travellers alike will be watching how Kyiv responds to Beijings appeal and what it means for the broader push toward de-escalation.
