From 2021 to 2025, the Chinese mainland's bio-manufacturing industry has achieved landmark growth, driven by breakthroughs in scale, technology and industrial clusters, according to the Chinese mainland's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Key highlights:
- Total industry scale reached 1.1 trillion yuan (about $156.2 billion).
- Bio-fermentation products now account for over 70 percent of global output.
- Food additives and bio-pharmaceuticals sub-sectors each posted annual revenues exceeding 400 billion yuan.
Innovation is on the rise: the mainland now represents more than 20 percent of worldwide bio-manufacturing patent applications. A suite of new instruments—from domestically produced high-throughput gene sequencers to large-scale fermenters—have moved from labs into production lines. Several national key laboratories and industrial innovation platforms have also been established, laying the groundwork for next-gen biotech advances.
Enterprise growth has followed suit. During this period, the Chinese mainland cultivated multiple backbone companies with annual operating revenues over 10 billion yuan, while technologically advanced 'little giant' firms emerged as leaders in niche fields. Nearly 40 pilot-scale capacity-building platforms and numerous localized incubators received government support, fostering a vibrant ecosystem for startups and established players alike.
As the 14th Five-Year Plan wraps up by the end of 2025, the Chinese mainland's bio-manufacturing sector stands as a global powerhouse—setting the stage for future innovation in health, food and materials.
