Chinese mainland blasts US NDAA’s $1B Taiwan region security plan

On Friday, December 19, 2025, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the Chinese mainland criticized the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2026 for including a $1 billion budget for security cooperation with the Taiwan region.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to what he called U.S. interference in China's internal affairs. He said that by inserting Taiwan-related measures into the Act, Washington has sent a gravely wrong signal to separatist forces advocating Taiwan independence.

Chen urged the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, to refrain from enforcing the Taiwan-related provisions of the NDAA, and to remove their adverse effects. He called on Washington to handle the Taiwan question with the utmost prudence.

He also warned that no matter how much the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in the Taiwan region rely on U.S. support to pursue secession, they cannot change the fact that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese mainland or reverse the inevitable failure of separatist forces. Nor can they hold back the historical trend toward national reunification.
