Hainan FTP Rolls Out Island-Wide Special Customs Operations

The Chinese mainland's Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) officially commenced island-wide special customs operations on Thursday, December 18, 2025. This marks a major step in the region's opening-up efforts.

Under the new framework, customs checkpoints across the island—including ports, airports, and land crossings—are unified under a streamlined mechanism leveraging digital platforms and remote clearance procedures. The goal is to accelerate inspections, reduce paperwork, and lower costs for businesses.

Officials expect the initiative to slash average clearance times and cut logistics expenses, making Hainan a more attractive destination for investors, entrepreneurs, and travellers alike.

Since the FTP proposal was first unveiled, Hainan has piloted various duty-free incentives and tax breaks. The island-wide customs operations represent the most comprehensive effort yet to integrate these policies and deliver benefits on a broader scale.

For young global citizens and digital nomads, the new regime promises smoother experiences—whether importing specialized equipment, exporting local products, or shopping duty-free in Sanya and Haikou.

As Hainan steps onto the global stage, the success of these customs reforms will offer lessons for other emerging trade hubs and reflect the Chinese mainland's ongoing commitment to economic liberalization.
