Chinese Mainland Wetlands Remain Above 800 Million Mu in 14th Five-Year Plan

As of December 2025, the Chinese mainland's wetland area has remained above 800 million mu throughout the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025). This milestone reflects a nationwide push to protect and restore vital ecosystems, according to data released by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

During this period, officials implemented over 1,000 wetland protection projects and scientifically restored 4.34 million mu (about 290,000 hectares) of wetlands. From coastal marshes to inland peatlands, these efforts have strengthened flood control, water purification, and biodiversity conservation across the region.

Wetlands play a critical role in carbon storage and serve as habitats for countless species. Maintaining an area above 800 million mu underscores the Chinese mainland's commitment to ecological security as the 14th Five-Year Plan draws to a close this year.

Looking ahead to the next planning cycle, sustained monitoring and community-led restoration will be key to building on this success. As global climate challenges intensify, these lessons offer valuable insights for countries and regions seeking to balance development with nature conservation.
