On Thursday, December 18, 2025, China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, through spokesperson Chen Binhua, urged the United States to immediately halt its latest arms package to the Taiwan region, valued at up to $11 billion.
"The Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests and the red line in China-U.S. relations," Chen said, describing Washington's announcement as "a flagrant interference in China's internal affairs."
According to Chen, the sale violates the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, undermining China's sovereignty and security interests. He warned that it sends "a grave and wrong signal" to those seeking "Taiwan independence."
Chen also criticized the Democratic Progressive Party authorities for seeking U.S. backing for a separatist agenda, accusing them of risking the safety of residents of Taiwan and painting them as "peace-breakers" and "warmongers."
He called on all residents of Taiwan to recognize the separatist forces' "vicious nature" and cautioned that China's national reunification is "unstoppable," pledging decisive countermeasures if any group crosses what he termed Beijing's red line.
This development underscores the ongoing geopolitical frictions in the Asia-Pacific region and sets the stage for a tense period in China-U.S. ties. Observers will be watching closely for how both capitals navigate this high-stakes confrontation in the weeks ahead.
