On December 16, 2025, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, called for a comprehensive and durable ceasefire in Gaza during an open meeting of the UN Security Council on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
He noted that over the past two months, frequent violations of the Gaza ceasefire agreement have cost hundreds of civilian lives. A true ceasefire must end all hostile actions, not merely shift high-intensity clashes to low-grade skirmishes. Any reckless breach risks collapsing the fragile truce.
China urged all relevant parties, especially Israel, to immediately honor their ceasefire commitments, halt measures that fuel tensions, and support mediators in enforcing the agreement. Fu Cong emphasized the need to open all Gaza border crossings, lift restrictions on humanitarian aid deliveries, and facilitate UN and agency relief efforts.
Highlighting broader concerns in the West Bank, he called on Israel to suspend settlement activity, curb settler violence, restore tax revenues to the Palestinian National Authority, and remove economic constraints undermining Palestinian governance.
Fu Cong reiterated that the only viable path to lasting peace is the two-state solution. Any plan for Gaza must respect "Palestinians governing Palestine" and reject efforts to alter the territory's demographic or geographic makeup. He urged the international community to unite behind a revived two-state framework and back Palestine's bid for full UN membership.
Reaffirming China's support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, Fu Cong pledged continued cooperation with the global community to secure a durable ceasefire, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and push for a comprehensive, fair, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue.
