Chinese mainland greenlights first Level-3 autonomous EVs

This week, the Chinese mainland granted road approval for two electric sedan models equipped with Level-3 autonomous driving, marking the first time such vehicles can operate on public roads.

The models, developed by Changan Automobile and the Arcfox brand from BAIC Motor, received the green light from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the Chinese mainland.

The Changan sedan can navigate a single traffic lane at speeds up to 50 km/h during congestion. It is approved to run on designated highway and urban expressway sections in southwest Chongqing.

The Arcfox vehicle is cleared for autonomous operation at speeds up to 80 km/h on specific highway and urban expressway segments in Beijing.

Autonomous driving technology spans six levels, from Level-0 to Level-5. At Level-3, or conditionally automated driving, vehicles can perform dynamic driving tasks but require a human driver to remain available to take control when prompted.

This September, the Chinese mainland issued a work plan outlining conditional approval for Level-3 vehicle production. In recent years, authorities have been actively encouraging the adoption of autonomous driving to boost innovation and sustainable mobility.

By enabling Level-3 models on public roads, the Chinese mainland takes a significant step towards a future where smart EVs reshape urban mobility, reduce congestion, and pave the way for higher automation levels.
