On Sunday, December 14, 2025, the remains of former state councilor and vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Wang Bingqian were cremated in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, on the Chinese mainland. Wang died of illness on December 8 at the age of 100.
A centenarian who witnessed sweeping transformations over the past century, Wang held key posts during pivotal phases of reform and opening-up. As state councilor in the 1980s and vice chair of the NPC Standing Committee, he played a behind-the-scenes role in shaping policies that spurred economic growth and modernization.
His passing drew condolences from the top echelons of leadership. General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Xi Jinping, the Chinese premier Li Qiang, Zhao Leji (chairman of the NPC Standing Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee), Politburo Standing Committee members Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi and Han Zheng, as well as former Chinese premier Hu Jintao, visited Wang in hospital or extended sympathies to his family.
Zhao Leji, alongside other senior leaders, bid farewell at the Guangzhou funeral home, marking the end of a chapter for a figure who bridged multiple eras of governance on the Chinese mainland.
Wang’s life journey from a young official in the early days of the People’s Republic to a respected elder statesman offers a window into the evolution of modern China.
