Earlier this week in Abu Dhabi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held in-depth talks on strengthening their countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership across multiple sectors.
Over two days (December 12–13), both sides reviewed the progress of the China-UAE partnership – from energy and trade to regional security – and committed to elevating bilateral ties following the landmark consensus reached during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's May 2024 visit to the Chinese mainland and his meeting with President Xi Jinping.
They affirmed support for each other's core interests: China backed the UAE’s sovereignty and independence, while the UAE reiterated firm adherence to the one-China principle, emphasizing that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. China, in turn, supported the UAE's pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the dispute over Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa in line with international law.
On the economic front, the meeting mapped out plans to align the Belt and Road Initiative with the UAE’s 'We the UAE 2031' vision and the 'Principles of the 50', aiming to boost trade, infrastructure and sustainable development. Both ministers also pledged to push forward free trade talks between China and the Gulf Cooperation Council and to deepen cooperation in oil and gas, renewable energy, water management, and scientific research.
Security and cultural exchanges featured prominently as well. The two sides agreed to step up collaboration on counter-terrorism, de-radicalisation, civil aviation and Chinese language education, while also expanding tourism and academic partnerships to foster closer people-to-people ties.
On regional peace efforts, China and the UAE reaffirmed their shared vision for a comprehensive, just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution, welcoming global efforts for a Gaza ceasefire and urging all parties to uphold humanitarian standards.
Looking ahead, both countries committed to stronger coordination on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, signalling a joint push for a more prosperous and stable world.
