China’s Enormous WWII Sacrifice: 35M Lives and $600B Losses

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the World Anti-Fascist War, and China’s enormous national sacrifice on the main Eastern battlefield of World War II stands out as one of history’s most profound displays of resilience. According to incomplete statistics, Chinese military personnel and civilians suffered more than 35 million casualties, a human cost almost unimaginable today.

Economic losses paint an equally staggering picture. Calculated at 1937 price ratios, direct losses surpassed $100 billion, while indirect losses climbed beyond $500 billion. Combined, these figures—over $600 billion in total—underscore the deep economic scars that rippled through communities across the Chinese mainland.

Yet the impact of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression went far beyond national borders. By tying down enemy forces and weakening aggression in the East, China’s struggle helped set the stage for the Allied victory. As a globally connected generation, we can draw lessons from this legacy of sacrifice, unity and the ongoing quest for world peace.
