China and Brunei Pledge Deeper Cooperation Ahead of 2026 Anniversaries

On Thursday, December 11, 2025, in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, met with Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, Brunei's second minister of foreign affairs.

Wang emphasized that China is ready to work with Brunei to maintain high-level exchanges, enhance strategic communication, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and strengthen multilateral collaboration. "We will further promote the building of the China-Brunei community with a shared future," he said.

He noted that 2026 will mark the 5th anniversary of the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership and the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei. Wang said China will continue to offer mutual support and trust alongside ASEAN, align development strategies and create new cooperation highlights.

Wang also called for upholding open regionalism, practicing true multilateralism and resisting any unilateral bullying or Cold War mentality. He urged both sides to work together as a strong force for regional prosperity and stability.

For his part, Dato Erywan said Brunei will use next year's anniversaries as an opportunity to strengthen high-level exchanges with China, enhance political mutual trust, promote cultural and people-to-people ties, and deepen cooperation in manufacturing, agriculture and fisheries.

He added that amid international uncertainties, regional cooperation is essential to resist unilateralism and neocolonialism, and praised China as a key promoter of regional unity and stability.

As 2026 approaches, both countries are poised to turn these anniversaries into concrete initiatives that boost growth for their people and the wider region.
