Earlier this week, on December 8, the Group of Friends of Global Governance officially kicked off at UN headquarters in New York, bringing together representatives from nearly 40 founding member states. Chaired by Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, the new platform aims to deepen cooperation on major global governance challenges and uphold the spirit of multilateralism.
Guided by the Global Governance Initiative, China’s fourth global initiative following proposals on development, security and civilization, the group seeks to pool collective strength and advance a fairer global order. “It is our hope to join hands with all partners to deepen exchanges and cooperation on major global governance issues, pool our collective strength, uphold the banner of multilateralism, and work together for a future of fairness,” Fu said at the inaugural meeting.
Since its launch by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the GGI has drawn support from more than 140 countries and international organizations, Fu noted. In a recent interview, he highlighted the need to uphold international fairness and justice, strengthen the United Nations’ role, and drive reforms to improve global governance under the GGI’s guidance.
Described as an open and inclusive platform, the Group of Friends of Global Governance invites more like-minded members to join its ranks. China expressed its willingness to work with all countries on the UN platform to implement the GGI, build a more just global governance system and advance a community with a shared future for humanity.
