HKSAR’s 8th LegCo Set to Drive Hong Kong’s Next Development Phase

The Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has a new mandate. At a press briefing this Tuesday, Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, president of the seventh-term LegCo, outlined how the incoming eighth-term LegCo will partner with the HKSAR government to inject fresh vitality into Hong Kong's development.

The election, held this past Sunday with results announced on Monday morning, returned 50 incumbent members and welcomed 40 first-time legislators. Leung highlighted this blend of experience and fresh perspectives as a key driver for reforms and sustainable growth under the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong."

Looking ahead to the new four-year term starting January 1, 2026, the focus will be on promoting policy innovation, economic diversification and social progress. Leung encouraged the 50 re-elected members to mentor their 40 new colleagues, fostering collaboration and fast-tracking their adaptation to LegCo's legislative work.

As Hong Kong prepares for its next chapter, the eighth-term LegCo aims to be a catalyst for meaningful change. With experienced leaders and new voices working together, the city is poised to navigate challenges and seize opportunities in the years to come.
