At a Security Council briefing on Monday, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, called on the global community to embrace multilateralism and strive for "common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security." The appeal came during a session with the chairperson-in-office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Fu highlighted that the current global security landscape is deteriorating, marked by escalating geopolitical conflicts, frequent flare-ups in hotspot areas, and a rise in unilateralism and protectionism. He warned that traditional and non-traditional security threats are increasingly interlocking and compounding, challenging existing governance frameworks.
In response, he urged the United Nations and regional organizations like the OSCE to deepen cooperation and contribute proactively to maintaining international peace and security. "Under the current circumstances, it is important for the international community to champion a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security," Fu said.
Key recommendations from the briefing included practicing true multilateralism, upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and reinforcing the United Nations as the core of the international system. Fu also called for supporting dialogue and consultations, rejecting Cold War mentalities and bloc confrontations, and facilitating peace talks and mediation based on the needs and will of the countries concerned.
Turning to specific conflicts, many Security Council members raised the situation in Ukraine. Fu reiterated China's consistent stance: "Dialogue and negotiations are the only viable pathway to resolve the Ukraine crisis." He encouraged all involved parties to work towards a balanced, effective, and lasting European security framework.
