30th Anniversary of Panchen Erdeni Chos-kyi rGyal-po’s Enthronement

Yesterday, December 8, 2025, marked the 30th anniversary of the enthronement of the 11th Panchen Erdeni Chos-kyi rGyal-po at Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, Xizang.

On November 29, 1995, a ceremony at Lhasa's Jokhang Temple drew a slip from a golden urn in front of a statue of Shakyamuni, identifying a five-year-old boy, rGyal-mtshan Nor-bu from Lhari County, as the true reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Erdeni. With approval from the Chinese government, he was formally enthroned on December 8, 1995, marking the first Golden Urn Ceremony recognized since the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Today, this milestone sits at the crossroads of deep-rooted tradition and modern engagement. Jokhang Temple and Tashilhunpo Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, draw pilgrims and travelers from around the world. Digital initiatives, such as virtual tours and immersive storytelling, have opened these sacred spaces to global audiences, fostering new connections and cultural appreciation.

As the world reflects on three decades since this historic event, young global citizens and changemakers are invited to explore how rituals like the Golden Urn Ceremony continue to shape cultural identity, sustainable travel, and interfaith dialogue across borders.
